‘Creepy’ sex fiend weeps in court after sentence handed down
2-3 minutes

A “creepy” sex fiend who sexually assaulted four young girls and tried to buy one of his victim’s silence for $10 wept in court as he was jailed for almost a decade.

Edmund Akkary admitted seven offences including four counts of committing an indecent act with or in the presence of a child, grooming for sexual conduct and sexual assault of a child under 16.

“It was creepy, salacious and abhorrent behaviour,” Victorian County Court Judge Frances Hogan said on Thursday.

The 33-year-old wept and wiped his eyes when the judge jailed him for nine years and five months.

Akkary admitted abusing his victims when they were aged 12 to 17 between 2014 and 2017.

One of them was targeted from the age of 13 with sexualised texts but his behaviour continued to escalate.

He attempted to grab the girl’s breast but she turned away and threatened to get out of the car.

“He gave her $10 so she would not tell her mother what happened,” court documents show.

He then tried to bribe the same victim in 2016 with video games to make her touch him.

His other offences included molesting a girl while his genitals were exposed.

“Your behaviour was seriously aberrant and offensive,” Judge Hogan said.

“You sought out your young victims when other adults were not immediately present.”

The judge was also concerned that despite his guilty plea, Akkary had refused to accept full responsibility for his actions.

The girls and their families struggled to come to terms with his actions, which had caused “terrible and widespread harm”, the judge said.

One victim suffered nightmares and flashbacks while another was left feeling disgusted, depressed and angry.

The court heard Akkary had a mild intellectual disability, an IQ of 73 and could only read to a year five level.

He also had trouble with impulse control and had a spinal injury that led to him needing a walker.

Akkary will be eligible for parole after serving five years and five months behind bars.
