MIDDLETOWN - A Middletown Police officer was shot after being flagged down by a woman for a possible domestic violence incident Saturday night, according to the city's police department.

The wounded officer is in stable condition, Lt. Jeffry Thoelen said in a press release early Sunday morning. A possible shooting suspect is in critical condition after the officer returned fire and shot him.
The Orange County District Attorney's Office and state police responded to the scene of Myrtle Avenue in Middletown where a city police officer was shot while on duty in uniform late Saturday night.

The uniformed officer was stopped by a woman in need of help outside a residence on Myrtle Avenue at around 7:42 p.m. while the officer patrolled the neighborhood in a marked police vehicle. When the officer pulled over and got out of the car to get more information from the woman, the officer was shot in the left forearm by a man who was walking out of the residence.

The officer immediately shot back at the shooter, Thoelen said. After, the injured officer called for additional police to respond to the scene. Once more officers arrived, they secured the suspect and tried providing medical care to both the officer and the suspect.

A loaded handgun was recovered at the scene, both Thoelen and District Attorney David Hoovler said in an early morning press release.

Neither the officer nor the suspected shooter involved were identified Sunday morning.

Both the suspected shooter and the officer were taken to Garnet Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill, police said. The suspect was later transferred to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for more advanced care.

State police and the DA's office responded to the scene shortly after the shooting late Saturday night.

The DA's office will take the lead on the investigation, as is state protocol as of 2015 for a police-involved shooting, Hoovler said. State police recovered evidence and spoke to witnesses at the scene.

The City of Middletown Police Department is cooperating with the investigation, Hoovler and Thoelen said in their statements.

The DA's office will conduct two investigations, one before a grand jury and another directly within the office, Hoovler explained. The findings in the office's investigation, which could take up to five months to complete after toxicology reports come back, will be made public in a report when finalized.

"Now, more than ever, it is essential that those who illegally use weapons are held accountable and it is equally important that the public has confidence in the integrity of the investigation and the prosecutorial process," Hoovler said in a statement.
